Mississippi's Top 50 Most Influential
Having training as both a lawyer and a FBI agent isn’t required to be a lobbyist in Mississippi . . . but it doesn’t hurt. Clifford Thompson has been roaming the halls under the Capitol Dome since 1980, and is one of the go-to lobbyists companies looking for guidance in the legislative process.
The average bill in the Mississippi legislature at the beginning of the session has about an 8% chance of being passed into law. Clifford Thompson has decades of experience and his involvement in bills increase those chances dramatically. He is probably known best in the Capitol for the breadth of issues that he’s handled.
Probably one of the best reflections of his influence and how much he is thought of in the Capitol is the fact that all four of his children are involved in the government relations business in some way. Jim, Ted and Nan all work for Thompson and Associates and his other son Ben Thompson has his own shop.
Mississippi Top 50 is an annual list of the people who are judged to be the most influential leaders in the state. This bipartisan selection of leaders comes from the ranks of elected and appointed officials, economic development professionals, business, media and government affairs. The awards are sponsored by Y’all Politics and Supertalk Mississippi and awardees were nominated through an open process.
