Mississippi’s Top 50 Most Influential
Keith Carter, a former Rebel All-American basketball player and a decorated fundraiser and administrator for the Ole Miss athletics department, was named Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics on November 22, 2019 by University of Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boyce
Carter served in the role on a temporary basis for the previous six months, having the interim tag removed after receiving a unanimous recommendation from the members of a highly respected search committee
Carter’s first four-plus years on the job have marked one of the most successful periods in the history of the university, producing two national championships, record postseason participation including a pair of New Year’s Six bowl appearances and its best finishes ever in the Learfield College Directors’ Cup
Under Carter, the Ole Miss brand has never been stronger after an historic 2023 calendar year. The women’s basketball team reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007 and recorded a school-record 11 SEC wins. On the men’s side, Carter tabbed former national coach of the year Chris Beard to lead the team last March, and it paid immediate dividends as the Rebels jumped out to a 13-0 start and were one of the last three undefeated teams in the nation. The momentum in Oxford is highlighted by the football program’s first 11-win campaign, a victory over Penn State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and its highest AP final ranking (No. 9) since 1969
Ole Miss turned in arguably its greatest athletics season ever in 2021-22, headlined by a Men’s College World Series championship, its first 10-win football regular season and an Allstate Sugar Bowl appearance. With 16 of the 18 Rebel teams reaching the NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss earned a record finish in the Learfield Cup for the second straight year at No. 20, the highest ever for a school from the state of Mississippi.
