Cool and slick are not words that you’d typically use to describe Rep. Andy Gipson. The Braxton native is equal parts business lawyer, preacher, politician and farmer. He may in fact be the most unassuming power broker in the Mississippi Legislature.
Elected in 2007, his political timing was perfect. While Republicans were building for the eventual takeover in 2011, he was in both the policy and political trenches making a name for himself in the House Chamber. When 2011 came along, he was a go to player for Speaker Philip Gunn. As a transactional lawyer with the Jones Walker firm in Jackson, he has played key roles on Ways and Means and his legal acumen has also made him Chair of Judiciary B and a member of the powerful Rules Committee. In short, his name on a bill means that it is a serious piece of legislation that other members give deference to.
His influence in the body has given him the platform to take on a lot of the more thorny social issues and be a voice for social conservatives on those issues. He has taken particular leadership on gun issues where Mississippians can now conceal carry without a permit.
