Mississippi's Top 50 Most Influential
Under the definition of “congenial” in the dictionary, there’s a picture of Senator Roger Wicker. A former state senator and US Congressman from the first district, he interestingly started his career as a staffer to the man he’d ultimately replace. Roger Wicker was tapped by then Governor Haley Barbour to take Senator Trent Lott’s seat after he retired in 1997. He handily dispatched former Governor Ronnie Musgrove in the special election in 2008, and was since re-elected in 2012.
He has ascended quickly through the ranks and how sits on the Senate Republican leadership team as the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the group charged with getting Senate Republicans elected nationally. In the chaotic 2016 cycle, that’s been an adventure to say the least. Should the Senate stay in Senate hands in November, he’ll get a lions share of the credit for that tall political order.
As a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Wicker is extremely involved in veterans and national security issues. He sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and importantly to Mississippi sits on the Subcommittee for Seapower. Wicker is also a member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, serving as chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet; Budget Committee; Environment and Public Works Committee; and the Rules Committee.
