Senator Juan Barnett is a dedicated public servant with a lifelong commitment to his country, state, and community.
A native of Jasper County, Mississippi, he proudly served in the United States Army, participating in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Following his military service, he entered public office and was elected mayor of Heidelberg, Mississippi, where he served for 15 years, earning the trust and support of his constituents.
In 2016, Barnett was elected to represent District 34 in the Mississippi State Senate. As Chairman of the Senate Corrections Committee, he has emerged as a leading voice in criminal justice reform, advocating for policies that promote public safety while emphasizing rehabilitation, workforce reentry, and reducing recidivism. His leadership has been instrumental in passing legislation aimed at improving prison conditions, expanding educational and vocational training for incarcerated individuals, and providing second-chance opportunities for nonviolent offenders.
Beyond his legislative role, Barnett serves on multiple committees and remains actively engaged in initiatives that support economic development, education, and veterans’ affairs. He is a devoted husband to Jacqueline Barnett and is a proud father to Jayla, Jayvone, Juandria, and William—as well as a grandfather to Isaiah.
